Other causes of nausea during pregnancy
Not every case of nausea during pregnancy is pregnancy-related. For example, nausea and vomiting can be caused by preeclampsia. This is usually discovered by the midwife during a routine check‑up. With preeclampsia, your organs may be affected due to your blood pressure becoming too high during pregnancy. You may need plenty of rest or medication to lower your blood pressure. Most cases of preeclampsia aren’t severe, but some women might require hospital care.
Symtoms of preeclampsia:
- Severe headache
- Changes in vision, e.g. blurred vision or flashing lights
- Pain below your ribs
- Nausea and vomiting after week 18
- Hands, feet or face suddenly becoming swollen
- Feeling generally unwell
If you feel unsure, you should contact your healthcare provider or call the national medical advice line (1177) for advice..
